Enrolling and graduating from the MIR Program at Queen’s University is one of the best decisions I have made in my career. This decision was made to compliment my practical experience in labour relations with a more formal education at a major institution. When I began the MIR in 2012, we had recently completed contract negotiations at a mid-sized unionized manufacturing facility, where I served as the chief spokesperson. The MIR provided me with a plethora of theories, concepts and models that not only helped me while I was working and negotiating with the union, but also continues to return dividends today outside of the traditional labour relations context.
 
Having the ability to complete a Masters level program in 3 years by attending classes for several days each month is exceptional. When not in class, the assigned self-directed course work allowed me to schedule my time effectively for a sufficient work/life/school balance and create a custom schedule to fit my lifestyle. Every student when enrolling in the MIR will develop their own cadence of work; however, if you are committed to the work, deliverables and the learning process, you will be successful.
 
The MIR has supported me in many ways. Initially, the MIR changed how I approached labour relations while completing the program. When you are learning and applying those learnings in “real time,” you see true value in the content. Following completing the MIR, the models, concepts and theories have stuck with me and I find myself drawing on them frequently as I am addressing problems or approaching situations in my current role. While the degree is important as a credential to build credibility, it is only as impactful as the content and how it shapes the work that you do. The MIR has shaped my perspective and continues to provide value to my career.
 
The students and faculty were exceptional. Throughout each course, I was constantly surprised that the professors were engaged, excited and completely committed to the education process. This was not only refreshing, but also ensured that the discussions and content were relevant, lively and engaging. I found the faculty to be available before and after class and they were actively involved in the well-being of the students and their personal and professional successes.

Are you looking for graduate level training that will propel you throughout your career?  The MIR offers a variety of core courses in labour relations, employment law, and human resource management, and elective courses in areas such as human rights law, negotiations and conflict resolution.  Together, these courses provide an advanced degree for career advancement in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.

This ten to twelve-month Master's Program in Industrial Relations requires three terms of full-time study on campus. Admission requirements are a four-year bachelor's degree with upper second-class (B+) standing from a recognized university and demonstrated evidence of strong academic potential. An applicant whose native languages do not include English must submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan University English Language test with a score of at least 625 to be admitted to the program. Applicants are not required to write the GRE or GMAT.

Core degree courses are intended to provide students with foundational skills in Industrial Relations, Human Resources, and Labour Law.  Courses include:

  • MIR 810  - Unions and Collective Bargaining
  • MIR 823 - Industrial Relations and Labour Law I
  • MIR 824 - Industrial Relations and Labour Law II
  • MIR 830 - Human Resource Management
  • MIR 840 - Labour Economics and Industrial Relations
  • MIR 850 - Organizational Behaviour
  • MIR 897 - Applied Analytical Methods I

In addition to core degree courses, students are expected to take four elective courses, derived from a combination of a) classes, b) skills seminars (3 skills seminars = 1 elective), and/or c) independent research.  Electives vary year to year.  Recent offerings include:

Are you looking for graduate level training that will propel you throughout your career?  The PMIR offers a variety of core courses in labour relations, employment law, and human resource management, and elective courses in areas such as human rights law, negotiations and conflict resolution.  Together, these courses provide an advanced degree for career advancement in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.

Our PMIR program is structured for part-time studies that normally allow full-time employees to complete the degree in three years. Each year, classes are typically offered one weekend a month from September through February, and for two intensive study weeks in the spring.

The Queen's PMIR program is open to receiving applications from individuals who hold a four-year bachelor's degree with upper-class standing (B+) from accredited institutions.  Applicants to the PMIR program must also possess at least three years of full-time work experience related to the field.
