Hon. Warren K. Winkler Speaker Series in Industrial Relations
 
The Hon. Warren K. Winkler Speaker Series in Industrial Relations was established to enhance the intellectual experience of graduate students engaged in the study of industrial relations, by bringing leading practitioners and academics in the broad field of industrial relations to Queen’s to deliver a lecture or seminar in the Master of Industrial Relations programs.
 
This new lecture series is named in honour of The Hon. Warren K. Winkler, who has made outstanding contributions to the study and practice of industrial relations in Canada, and who was appointed Chief Justice of Ontario and President of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 2007.

The Kumar-Wood Professional in Residence

The Kumar-Wood Professional in Residence was established in 2008 to recognize the significant contributions of Dr. Pradeep Kumar and Dr. W. D. Wood to the study and practice of industrial relations. The Endowment is intended to provide funding to bring leading practitioners to Queen’s to contribute to the learning experience of students in the MIR program.

H Carl Goldenberg Scholarship in Industrial Relations

Established in memory of H. Carl Goldenberg (1907-1996), lawyer, advisor to provincial and federal governments, Royal Commissioner, Senator, and one of Canada's most eminent labour mediators and arbitrators. Awarded to a student with a record of strong academic achievement who is pursuing a Master of Industrial Relations degree with a focus upon industrial relations. The recipient will be encouraged to develop a research initiative based upon Carl Goldenberg's interest and work in dispute resolution and to make use of the Queen's Archives Goldenberg Papers Collection. Recipients of this award will be known as the Goldenberg Scholar.

The Alumni Fellowship Fund was created by graduates of the MIR program to support exceptional scholars who demonstrate financial need and commitment to the field of industrial relations. Alumni Fellowships are awarded annually, and are critical to enhancing access to graduate studies in industrial relations.

Are you looking for graduate level training that will propel you throughout your career?  The MIR offers a variety of core courses in labour relations, employment law, and human resource management, and elective courses in areas such as human rights law, negotiations and conflict resolution.  Together, these courses provide an advanced degree for career advancement in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.

This ten to twelve-month Master's Program in Industrial Relations requires three terms of full-time study on campus. Admission requirements are a four-year bachelor's degree with upper second-class (B+) standing from a recognized university and demonstrated evidence of strong academic potential. An applicant whose native languages do not include English must submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan University English Language test with a score of at least 625 to be admitted to the program. Applicants are not required to write the GRE or GMAT.

Core degree courses are intended to provide students with foundational skills in Industrial Relations, Human Resources, and Labour Law.  Courses include:

  • MIR 810  - Unions and Collective Bargaining
  • MIR 823 - Industrial Relations and Labour Law I
  • MIR 824 - Industrial Relations and Labour Law II
  • MIR 830 - Human Resource Management
  • MIR 840 - Labour Economics and Industrial Relations
  • MIR 850 - Organizational Theory and Design
  • MIR 897 - Applied Analytical Methods I

In addition to core degree courses, students are expected to take four elective courses, derived from a combination of a) classes, b) skills seminars (3 skills seminars = 1 elective), and/or c) independent research.  Electives vary year to year.  Recent offerings include:

Are you looking for graduate level training that will propel you throughout your career?  The PMIR offers a variety of core courses in labour relations, employment law, and human resource management, and elective courses in areas such as human rights law, negotiations and conflict resolution.  Together, these courses provide an advanced degree for career advancement in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.

Our PMIR program is structured for part-time studies that normally allow full-time employees to complete the degree in three years. Each year, classes are typically offered one weekend a month from September through February, and for two intensive study weeks in the spring.

The Queen's PMIR program is open to receiving applications from individuals who hold a four-year bachelor's degree with upper-class standing (B+) from accredited institutions.  Applicants to the PMIR program must also possess at least three years of full-time work experience related to the field.
