The one-year, full-time Master of Industrial Relations program (MIR) attracts new graduates as well as career employees wishing to renew or upgrade their credentials. The MIR-JD joint degree program is offered in cooperation with the Faculty of Law to those with strong interests in employment and labour law.
The part-time Professional Master of Industrial Relations (PMIR) program allows experienced professionals the opportunity to pursue graduate studies, while meeting full-time employment and personal responsibilities.
All of these programs provide the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to current organizational requirements and future challenges relating to the employment relations. Specific goals and objectives include the following:
- A thorough grounding in industrial relations theory and practice;
- Familiarity with current research and developments in the field broadly and the abiity to critically interpret this research;
- A multi-disciplinary approach to understanding research and practice in industrial relations, including a grounding in labour policy, labour relations and human resources management, labour law and labour economics,
- An understanding of evolving employment relationships and organizational dynamics; and
- A solid foundation in labour policy and legislation, the law governing the employment relationship and the collective bargaining relationship, and human rights law.
These objectives are achieved through a combination of formal coursework, analytical skills seminars, and independent research. Coursework involves, lectures, group work, simulations, case studies and interactions with visiting senior practitioners and policy makers in public and private sector organizations and labour unions.
